Super Spawn went to the allergist last week for a checkup, and a re-test for his allergies, to see where we’re at with them. Sometimes you grow out of things, but when you’re Super Spawn, you just add to the list.
My poor guy’s back during the test.
That’s what an allergy test looks like. And all those little red spots? Reactions.
As it turns out, kiddo is allergic to the whole world. Grass, trees, weeds, mold, pollen, cats, dogs, pecans, hazelnuts, and walnuts. (And that’s not even his whole list.)
*sigh* Anybody have a bubble you’d like to send me?
Anyway, we’ve been dealing with (a much smaller list, granted) allergies for a couple of years, but Super Spawn has always attended a Nut Free school. In August he’ll be starting at a school where nuts are fair game and, guys, I’m scared to death. (Those two very large reactions on his left? Those are the nuts. That is why we carry an EpiPen.)
Since we’re adding new nuts to the list along with a bunch of new environmental, what I’m looking for are books. Kids books preferably that would help teach him what to do if he comes in contact with nuts or how to know if he’s having a reaction to anything.
I realize many of you probably don’t deal with allergies and especially not with your kids, but you do know books. So I figured I’d ask anyway. Anybody know of good kid-centric allergy books? Or even books for me about how to handle this teaching aspect?

I don’t know of any books, but Living Without Magazine features articles on how to deal with food allergies in all kinds of situations. I know they’ve had a few articles/interviews with kids talking about how they cope; those might help. None of my food allergies (chicken, eggs, gluten, dairy) require an epi-pen thank goodness, but they can make me pretty miserable if I’m not careful. Good luck!

Thanks, Angelica, I’ll look that magazine up!
