I’m All Out of Control

by Holly Dodson

I hate feeling helpless.  It’s the absolute worst feeling in the world to me.  That sinking in your gut when you know your personal fate lies in the hands of others — it’s something I avoid as much as I can, if I’m honest.

Recently things in my life have been snatched out of my tight control, and I’ve had a bit of a hard time adjusting.  (Who am I kidding, I’m still not adjusted.)  I was sitting at my desk today thinking: Maybe I was a turtle in a past life.  Because when I feel like I’m being attacked by the universe, all I want to do is close my eyes and put my hands over my ears and pretend like none of it exists.  If I had a handy shell, I’d totally disappear into it.

That probably just means I need therapy though.  lol

Super Spawn started Kindergarten at the end of August.  He’s a full-blown big kid now!  And Mom over here is learning that once they hit that level, any ounce of control you retained at the pre-k level flies out the window like a dirty kleenex.  Forget those lovely evening chats about school, because by the end of the day he’s so over-stimulated all he can manage is to cry or stare at the TV and drool.  (Okay, he doesn’t drool, but it paints an appropriate picture for you.)

Then I totaled my car.  (And now it’s my turn to only manage crying.)  Which, everything is fine — well, except the car — but STRESS, OMG STRESS.

I swear I had a point when I started this post.

Oh well.  That’s where I’ve disappeared to.  Life.  Watching Doctor Who.  Attempting to breathe.  But I miss you guys.  I miss writing.  Haven’t been doing much of that either.  Well, I have, but I haven’t.  I’ve got a new sorta-kinda-almost-done-but-not-really draft.  I need to force myself to get back to it, it’s the only way to relieve some of this life anxiety – to just write through it.  :)

So brace yourselves, my dear lovelies, because you never know what I’ll say next.

Holiday Crazies

by Holly Dodson

So, you know how I took last week off to “work on revisions” and “relax”?

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ehm. I mean…that didn’t exactly happen. At all. Not even a little.

In fact, Super Spawn wound up sick, poor guy. Work was crazy, blah, blah, excuses, excuses. lol

Needless to say, this week I’ve got to get back on the wagon. I feel like I’ve missed so much by not blogging or reading blogs for a week. It’s more than a little weird.

But, onward we shall go! Tell me, how were your holidays?

My favorite part of my own was booking the resort for mine and Super Spawn’s return to Disney World after Christmas. (EEE!)

Super Spawn and the Tiny Violin

by Holly Dodson

So, Super Spawn had his very first violin recital last Friday night.
Cutest. Thing. EVER.

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=0bc84703e5&view=att&th=13395c9ad013492c&attid=0.8&disp=inline&zw

He stood up there on that stage like he owned the world.  He also kinda stole the show — his violin teacher told me at our lesson last night that all anyone could talk about afterward was how cute Super Spawn had been.  :)   He was a ham.

I had kinda the biggest Mom Fail of my life — I made it to the event with kid, cookies, violin, camera — and NO MEMORY CARD for the camera!  AUGH!

So, while I was hoping to get some video to share with you guys, the only video I have is on my mom’s camcorder and I have NO idea how to get it onto the computer.

But the recital was so much fun.  Alec oohed and aahed over the bigger kids when they played (they were phenomenal!), and decided he wants to be able to play violin like them.

It is kind-of amazing to watch someone become inspired that way — I suppose I must have that same look of joyful determination when I read a great book or finish a new project.

Anyway, this is kinda pointless, I just wanted to share.  :)   Hope you’re all having a good week.

Happy Halloween!

by Holly Dodson

The day Super Spawn has been anxiously awaiting for about two months now is FINALLY here!  lol  My cute little kiddo is dressing up as Jack Sparrow tonight (complete with authentic dreads and pirate medallion lol).  He has been planning this costume since the beginning of September…seriously.

Oh, and this post is a 100% rambly about me kind of post, so fair warning.  :)

We spent the day yesterday baking (I had to make 2 dozen cupcakes AND 2 dozen sugar cookies for school!  Not to mention all the cupcakes and brownies for us to decorate. Gah! lol) and making fun concoctions for our annual Halloween get together.

Pinterest totally gets the credit for these. :)

Tonight we’ll be having chili and hotdogs and trick-or-treating with some great friends.  I can’t wait.

Do you guys have any Halloween traditions?  What will you be doing tonight?

Banned Book Week

by Holly Dodson

Super Spawn made a video for you guys for the kickoff of banned book week.  Enjoy!

Big words from a little guy, “Please don’t ban my books.”

As a mother, I feel it’s important to point out that I fully support parents being involved in, and knowing what, their kids are reading.  What is fine for one child or teen to read may not be suitable for the next for a variety of reasons.  However, just because one child is lactose intollerant doesn’t mean every child should go without cheese.

Hope you all have a great Monday.  :)

Pulling on the Reigns

by Holly Dodson

So, as you guys know, Super Spawn is taking Suzuki Violin lessons.  We’ve been at it for a little over a month now, and the other day I sat marveling at yet another lesson my sweet four-year-old has taught me.

You see, the basis behind the Suzuki method of teaching violin is parent involvement.  I’m in all his lessons with him, and we practice together every single night.  Now, I had my share of music lessons growing up (though not as young as he is) so I was prepared for the daily repetition of skills, the stand this way, fingers curved, keep that wrist straight diatribe.

What I didn’t expect was a lesson in perspective.

Super Spawn is four.  The violin is a hard instrument to learn.  There are tons of little technical movements kids have to master before they ever put the bow to the string to make any kind of noise.  And when your mom is a Supremo Perfectionist?  Well, the fun gets sapped out of that practice faster than you can say quit.

The good news is, this Supremo Perfectionist Mom saw the light before it was too late.  Turns out, you don’t have to get it perfectly right from square one.  It’s okay to mess up, play around, and have a silly fun time while you do it.  And surprisingly enough, when Super Spawn is having fun in practice sessions, he’s learning it faster.

And I’m not lowering my expectations of him, don’t get me wrong.  We go into practice with a plan.  Tonight, we’re focusing on our Mississippi River rhythm, but we’re not just going to stand there and repeat it 30 times, we’re going to turn it into a game!  I think it’s worth mentioning that since I’ve structured our practices this way, he comes home and asks to practice every night.  How’s that for proof it works?  ;)

What does this have to do with anything?  Well, I put this into practice over the last few weeks with my new WIP’s first draft.  I went into my draft with a plan (a loose outline) and a daily wordcount goal to meet.  But instead of sitting down and attempting to write The Perfect Draft, I focused on enjoying the story.  I had fun with my characters and my plot, and as I go back and read it, I’m kinda impressed.  It’s actually way better than I expected.

On a normal occasion I’d be so worried about every word I wrote, every single bit of plot being just right, that pushing the words out would be a chore.  But thanks to my silly little violinist, I’ve learned how to pull the reigns and step back to have a little more fun with my own “practice”.

Making the Most of Your Time

by Holly Dodson

I know I’ve talked about this before on the blog, but it has been a long time, and a lot has changed in my life since then.  As a writer, there is always someone around me talking about time — whether there isn’t enough of it, they don’t know how I find it, or the dreaded question, “Is it being wasted?”

Let me break it down for you, and I want you to understand that this is something I struggle with a lot.  I think everyone does.

I work a full time job.  I commute 1.25 hours each way every day.  Every Monday night, Super Spawn has violin lessons.  Once or twice a month he has an extra lesson on Saturday morning.  We do violin practice every night for 10-20 minutes.  I have to feed, bathe, play with, and read to Super Spawn.

If I waited until he went to sleep every night to start thinking about my writing, I’d never get anything done.  So, here are some tricks I’ve learned to making the most of the few spare moments I can grab throughout the day.

1.  Time in the car -  I have about 15-20 minutes in the car between Super Spawn’s school and my office.  This is when I work through plot issues, or maybe work through the scene I’m going to write next.  This morning on the way in, Super Spawn was plugged into his DVD player in the car, and I was able to plan not only some things to add to previous chapters I’ve written, but I’ve also laid out the next two scenes to be written.  That will save me a lot of time when I sit down to write.

2.  Lunch – I’ve used my lunch hour to write since I first put pen to paper on my first novel back in 2009.  It’s probably my most productive writing time of the day.

3.  When kiddo is otherwise engaged – Super Spawn likes to play games/put puzzles together/otherwise entertain himself from time to time.  So I take my laptop into whatever room he’s in and type away while he plays at my feet.

4.  Bed time – Super Spawn loves to read at bed time, but his taste in books is somewhat different from most 4 year olds.  Ask him what his favorite book is and he’ll tell you Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  Seriously, that’s what he told his teacher.  So at bedtime we read some really great stories that not only challenge his imagination and keep him entranced, but also that keep me abreast of the industry.

5.  Night – Usually once Super Spawn finally drifts off, I’m exhausted too.  Still, it’s finally some uninterrupted peace to just sit and write.  If I could only hold my eyes open a little longer.  ;)

What do you all do to make the most out of your days?

Momspiration

by Holly Dodson

By which I mean Mom Inspiration, not perspiration.  ;)

It has been a little over a week since Super Spawn started his private violin lessons, and the little guy has impressed me more and more each day.

I’m not talking about technical proficiency or anything here, his bow hold is far from perfect, but I’m talking about dedication.  My four-year-old son practices for 20-30 minutes every night, no complaint.  He listens to the CD of music he’ll be learning over the next year for a minimum of an hour a day.

And he never complains.  Quite the opposite, he enjoys it.

Honestly, if I forget to turn his music on as soon as he gets in the car, he reminds me.  I’m just amazed at the level of devotion he is already showing toward his violin, and it’s more than a little inspiring.  He enjoys doing it, looks forward to it even, and then follows through and puts forth the effort to learn something new.

Each of his lessons, his teacher has started by asking him, “Super Spawn, do you still want to learn to play violin?”  To which he responds by jumping and yelling, “Yes!”

When I sit back and think about it, I get a little hot in the face.  I mean, I love writing.  I love building stories and crafting characters and everything that comes along with it.  But do I practice every day with excitement for what I’m doing?  No.  And maybe I should be.

I’m making a resolution in front of all of you, my lovely followers.  From now on, I am going to approach my writing like Super Spawn approaches his violin — with love, excitement, and dedication.  I won’t look at it as work, but as an enjoyable time I get to spend doing something that makes me truly happy.

What about you guys?  Want to join in on my pledge?

My name is Holly, and I write for the love of it.  Do you?

Again With the Mommy Thing, Plus a Blog Award

by Holly Dodson

Sorry, but I’m bursting with Mommy pride this week.  Just look at this cuteness!!

We don’t start lessons for at least another week, and I don’t know how I’ll contain him until then.  lol  He’s so enthusiastic about the violin — and he’s so, so careful and thoughtful with it.  It’s quite the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.  (Although, my folder and notebook of revision stuff beside him isn’t so cute.  Heh.)

This was the first time I let him hold the violin and the bow together.  :)   If you’re wondering…that’s a 1/10 violin.  They actually come even smaller!  It’s crazyness.

Okay, I’m done being THAT mom now.  I promise not to bombard you with pictures again any time soon.  Or, well, until he starts lessons or something.  Hehe.

On the writing side of things — I was given an award by Brit over at Pages and Stardust!  Thank you, Brit!

My Brain Hurts

by Holly Dodson

My head is full to the point of bursting this morning.  You ever have those days?  So many thoughts swirl around up there at the same time, you’re surprised they don’t leak out your ears.

Yeah.  That’s me today.

Just a warning — this is nothing about writing this morning.  It’s purely mommy pride.

Along with the revisions I’ve been working on, I’ve also been trying to figure out what kind of music lessons Super Spawn should start for a while now.

My gut reaction was piano, but kiddo has other ideas.

We’ve been watching lots of videos (thank you YouTube) of kids playing instruments and getting lessons to give him an idea of what it’s like.  Well, something clicked.  We were watching a little girl play piano when Super Spawn points to the side of the screen and says, “WHAT is that?”

I click the video and explain to him that it’s a little boy playing a violin.  It was a five-year-old playing in a huge concert hall.  So Super Spawn announces, “I’m going to play that.  I want a violin.  That’s going to be me.”  Then he shoved a t-shirt under his chin and held his little hands out and pretended to play.

And he has asked me every other minute since if I’ve bought him a violin yet.  lol

I played piano when I was a kid, so I’m not too sure what to expect from a violin, but I’m going to let him try.  :)   I’m excited that he’s so enthusiastic.  Any words of wisdom for me out there?
