Friday Fives – Holiday Wishes

by Holly Dodson

On Paper Hangover today, the topic is holiday wishes. I’m gonna give you fair warning — I’m a holiday sap.

1. For Super Spawn to have a magical experience — When I was a kid my parents and grandparents went to HUGE lengths to make us believe in Santa and the giving spirit. Even once we outgrew Santa we still had the most magical Christmases full of love and giving, and that’s something I want for my kiddo.

2. I want to help someone — Every Christmas for as long as I can remember we’ve helped a less fortunate family out. Even if we weren’t in the best position ourselves, we always share what we have. And an opportunity to help *always* presents itself. In fact, I was given one this morning, and my heart is just glowing.

3. For everyone to remain safe — Everyone travels a lot around the holidays. Family, friends, even Super Spawn and I will hit the roads this year. I wish that everyone would make it wherever they’re going safely. Last year we witnessed a horrific crash (but were able to help, thank goodness) that resulted in life-flight and three ambulances blaring away. I don’t want to relive that.

4.  For Super Spawn to feel loved –  This is really kinda personal, but it is a true wish, and I’m happy to report it came true.  I wished for kiddo’s dad to make an effort this Christmas, and two presents for Super Spawn arrived this week from him.  (His dad lives overseas)  I’m so glad.  So, so glad.

5.  Happiness and Peace — For everyone.  For each of you, for my family.  This is the time of year where we’re all missing our lost loved ones, and looking forward to the possibilities of next year.  I just hope that each of you finds peace and happiness in those dreams and memories.

See?!  Total holiday sap.  :)   What about you guys?  What’s on your wish list?

Friday Fives – Sleigh bells ring…

by Holly Dodson
  1. Black Friday -  I know, I know…I’m feeding into the giant overlord with this one.  I remember being quite young and watching my mom and aunt scour through newspaper ads in the living room floor after Thanksgiving dinner.  Every year of my life they did it, until two years ago when the torch was passed to my sister and me.  Now, we are NOT those crazy goons with pepper spray knocking grandma down to get some $1 towels.  We’re the ones giggling insanely as we wait patiently in line for whatever item we’re after.
  2. Elf on the Shelf – This is a new one for Super Spawn this year.  The elf comes with a book about how he reports to Santa every night on a child’s behavior.  (As a parent of a stubborn boy, I see this as genius.)  Now, Super Spawn does NOT, in fact, believe the elf is real.  He is willing to accept that Santa gave the elf a bit of Christmas magic, and that Santa moves the doll around our house each night.  lol  I’m going with it.
  3. Christmas Lights – I bet a lot of people have this one on the list.  Every year we go to a local park that gets festooned in more lights than you ever knew existed.  It’s a big family event every year, full of Christmas carols and laughter.
  4. Advent Calendar – I have no idea how long we’ve been doing the advent calendar in my family — we’ll suffice it to say I don’t remember a time without it.  It’s a little fabric thing that hangs on the wall, and the figures velcro onto the scene day by day.  My sister and I have discussed numerous times how we could possibly ever find another like it for our children, and every year we scour the stores and craft shows, but it seems Mom has the only one in existence.  (Which is maybe as it should be.)
  5. Pajamas – Christmas Eve means one thing in our house: New Pajamas.  :)   There is one set wrapped up in shiny Christmas paper for each of us to open on Christmas Eve every year.  (Yes, even at 27 years old, my mom is still buying me PJ’s for Christmas Eve!)  You better believe Super Spawn gets them too.

What about you guys?  What kind of traditions do you have in your family?  Join the discussion over at Paper Hangover.

Holiday Crazies

by Holly Dodson

So, you know how I took last week off to “work on revisions” and “relax”?

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ehm. I mean…that didn’t exactly happen. At all. Not even a little.

In fact, Super Spawn wound up sick, poor guy. Work was crazy, blah, blah, excuses, excuses. lol

Needless to say, this week I’ve got to get back on the wagon. I feel like I’ve missed so much by not blogging or reading blogs for a week. It’s more than a little weird.

But, onward we shall go! Tell me, how were your holidays?

My favorite part of my own was booking the resort for mine and Super Spawn’s return to Disney World after Christmas. (EEE!)

Happy Halloween!

by Holly Dodson

The day Super Spawn has been anxiously awaiting for about two months now is FINALLY here!  lol  My cute little kiddo is dressing up as Jack Sparrow tonight (complete with authentic dreads and pirate medallion lol).  He has been planning this costume since the beginning of September…seriously.

Oh, and this post is a 100% rambly about me kind of post, so fair warning.  :)

We spent the day yesterday baking (I had to make 2 dozen cupcakes AND 2 dozen sugar cookies for school!  Not to mention all the cupcakes and brownies for us to decorate. Gah! lol) and making fun concoctions for our annual Halloween get together.

Pinterest totally gets the credit for these. :)

Tonight we’ll be having chili and hotdogs and trick-or-treating with some great friends.  I can’t wait.

Do you guys have any Halloween traditions?  What will you be doing tonight?

Snow! In Florida!

by Holly Dodson

Well, the flurries were forecast for Christmas day, but decided to hold off until Sunday.  But it really did SNOW IN FLORIDA!  We got to share a little in the winter wonderland feel this year.  Pretty awesome if you ask me.  Although, we didn’t dare venture outside.  Too darn cold.
We had a fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate, and stayed snuggled in our blankets all weekend.
Super Spawn had an excellent Christmas and can’t wait for our trip to Universal!
I hope all of you had wonderful holidays, and maybe even found the time to sneak in some writing time for yourself.  ;)
Have a great Monday, lovelies.

Tipsy Tuesday – On Vacation

by Holly Dodson

Today, I am going to give you some Vacation/Theme Park tips from a Floridian who has been there and done all that. Me!

So, Florida is full of tourists on any given day of the week. We have beaches, Disney World, Universal, Miami, the rich and famous…let’s face it: Florida’s got it goin’ on.

I also never fail to notice that tourists don’t understand how to work the system around here. So, for my select lovelies, I’m gonna give you tips a la Harry Potter.First, just because it’s cool, here’s my quill and parchment I used to send letters home from Hogsmead!

Now, as most of us Florida residents know, when you get to a theme park (the minute it opens) you go straight to the attraction you most want to see. No lallygagging, girls! Hogsmead was amazing…beautiful…while the crowds were minimal. The later the day got, the more people showed up. Tourists — some from the states, most from England and Switzerland.

Then, first thing when you get to Hogsmead, go ahead and grab a butterbeer. There was no line when we got there, but later in the day it was miles long. By the way butterbeer tastes like you’re drinking butter cream frosting. Seriously. It’s delicious, but soooo sweet!

Then, if you are a purveyor of rides, you need to make your way to a line. The earlier in the day you ride, the shorter the line is going to be. As of about 10am the wait for the ride in Hogwarts was only 30 minutes. (All of the walkways and stores in Hogsmead are really small. That’s why they look so crowded. But trust me, the crowds weren’t bad at all until about 1pm)

After you’ve ridden your little hearts out, go find the Three Broomsticks and settle in for an early lunch. If you wait until noon to eat the lines will be ridiculous, and you may not get a table very quickly. We ate at about 11 and were seated immediately with our delicious fare.

After lunch, head over to Honeydukes for desert. The cauldron cake was phenomenal. Oh, and don’t leave without a box of salt water taffy…omg…best taffy EVER. Seriously. Get the taffy…and send me a box while you’re at it.

One thing Non-Floridians don’t realize is: while we are called the Sunshine State, it actually rains almost every day. During the summer it does rain every day. Every. Single. Day. Usually the rain will hold off until late afternoon when the clouds finally blow in from the coast — instant thunderstorm. So, another benefit of going early in the day. We left at about 1 or 1:30, had been through all the shops and bought WAY too much stuff. (see below for proof) So we were back at the hotel when the clouds let loose their fury.

Overall, everything was amazing. If you need anything just ask any worker you see. They’re all more than happy to snap a picture for you, or tell you where to find a broomstick.

Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend! I’m home with Super Spawn today, hiding from the rain and decided to take the day off from the blog routine. Will be back to normal tomorrow.

Happy 4th!

Mommy Monday- Memorial Day Fun!

by Holly Dodson
Happy Memorial Day, my lovelies!!!!

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Today we commemorate the many men and women who have died while in the military.

I’m spending the day home with Super-Spawn. (Yes, he wound up staying home for the holiday!! YAY!!!!)

Anyway, today is a day for swimming, barbecue, trips to the beach, and relaxation! I hope you all, whether in the US or abroad, have a wonderful day!

On a mommy note today, make sure to check the Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetic Database to find out just how safe your sunscreen is. They rate ingredients in products from 0-10, 0 being the safest and 10 being the worst. They don’t only rate sunscreen, you can find everything from bubble bath to foundation in their extensive database.

Sometimes the things we use to protect ourselves turn out to be worse for us than we thought.

A favorite sunscreen of mine is Badger, which rates in at 0. We never get sunburns as long as it is used properly, and that says a lot since we live in sunny Florida!

Now, time for some watermelon!
