Weekend Adventures

by Holly Dodson

I have been reminded in the last week why I love writing so much.  The actual act of making things up and putting them on a page.  It’s because life is crazy and unpredictable and ugly and wonderful all at once.  There are so many facets to a single person’s life that you could never know all of them, no matter what.

And having the ability to sit here at my laptop with a cup of coffee while I ponder the intricacies of relationships and reactions to even the most mundane events on paper puts life into perspective.  It gives me a whole new way to look at those (real people!) who surround me.  It makes me really consider their viewpoint on situations, and I truly believe it makes me be more empathetic toward them.

Unless they mess with Super Spawn, because then I kinda lose it.

But life is finally gaining a bit of sanity after everything that has been going on.  We bought a new car (and LOVE it!) over the weekend, which is a huge, huge stress relief.

Super Spawn with our new car!

We also got to see our wonderful hair stylist (whom we adore) for hair cuts…

New haircuts!

All in all, I’m feeling much more positive after a weekend of solving stressful situations.  Yay!  I also finished reading a FANTASTIC book, but I’ll tell you about that on Wednesday.  Until then, I’ll be writing.  Yep, I’m ready to dive back in.  YAY!

What did you all get up to this weekend?  Any adventures or insights?  I’d love to hear about it!

Currently…

by Holly Dodson

Apparently this is a meme that has been filtering around a lot lately.  I’ve heard  Katy Upperman, Kate Hart and Jessica Love have all had a hand in this.  Saw my friend Ghenet joined in, and thought it looked pretty fun, so here we go:

Loving…

Superspawn.  (Is that a copout?)  He’s such an amazing, smart, funny little guy.  Sometimes I find myself wishing I could just sit and watch him all day long at whatever he’s doing so I won’t miss a single thing.  But naturally he’d never allow that.  If he catches me watching him too closely he asks, “Mom, why are you staring at me like that?  It’s kinda creepy.”  *sigh*

Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter

Reading…

The Writer’s Tale by Russell T. Davies and Benjamin Cook

I’ve kinda turned into an RTD fangirl, and I am LOVING this book.  Now, it’s about a million pages long, and may take me forever to finish, but I’m enthralled.  Can’t put it down.  The whole book is uncensored emails between RTD and Ben as the 4th series of Who is being written — all the stress, fear, and everything.

Watching…

Doctor Who, always.  Season 7 is up to the 4th episode.  I’ll admit I’m maybe the most excited about what’s to come in the Christmas episode though.  I just love this show — all of it.  Every episode has something wonderful in it.  Can’t get enough.  Even though the fall finale is next week, with a break until Christmas, I’ll still be watching (or rather, re-watching).  That’s the best part of Doctor Who — no matter how many times I watch the episodes I still laugh or cry or grin like an idiot.  They never get old.

Thinking About…

Oh goodness, everything.  Getting a new car, the trip to Disney we’re taking in November, work, a couple of stories on the brain…you name it, I’m probably thinking about it in some capacity.

Anticipating…

Life getting back to normal.  Once all this car business finally gets settled I’m really hopeful that life will regain some semblance of ease in our day-to-day routine.  One can hope.

Wishing…

That for just once something could turn out in my favor.  God, that sounds horribly glum, but it’s how I’m feeling in the moment.  My sister and I joke all the time about how I always wind up with the short end of the stick — but it’s not even a joke, because I really do.  No matter what.

Making Me Happy…

I got to talk to Super Spawn’s teacher the other day and learned that he’s doing outstandingly well academically.  He’s the youngest in his class, so still has some behavioral areas he’s behind in (naturally), but I’m incredibly happy to hear he’s ahead of the curve in academics.  If kids fall behind in kindergarten, it can really hurt their future success.  It’s something I’ve worked very hard for, to get him there, and I will continue to.  The behavioral stuff will come with time — he’s as much as a year younger than some of the kids in his class, and when you’re five, that’s a LOT.

My New Toy

by Holly Dodson

So for the last three years  I’ve been writing on a teeny tiny 10.1 inch netbook (and that’s ridiculous).  THREE YEARS and three novels on the smallest keyboard known to man.

But not any more!  I have a new best friend:

Isn’t it just lovely?!  The keyboard is so nice to type on, it’s like my fingers are in hyper drive.  Full. Of. Awesome.  It’s fast, and shiny, and FAST.

If I were a better poet, I’d write it a love poem.  But I’ll save you that experience.  ;)

My revisions are going quite smoothly on the new toy.  I’m not sure if it’s the inspiration and ease of the new computer or just that things are clicking, but either way I am a HAPPY GIRL.  (Not to mention that I have some of the most awesome beta readers ever helping the revising along!)

Funny story.  (Not really, but I like to tell stories even if they aren’t funny, so humor me.)  In 2009 I wrote my first novel…well, the first whole novel I ever wrote.  And I thought, hey, I need a laptop so I can transcribe all of these notebooks (yes, a handwritten novel) into a word doc and figure out what to do next!  So I bought a netbook and told myself that if I kept at it, one day I’d buy myself a nice laptop.

It’s pretty obvious three years later that I’m keeping at it.  In fact, I’ll never give up the joy I’ve found in writing these silly books (that aren’t silly at all, it’s just a fun word).

You tell me, have you promised yourself anything like this?  Have you followed through on that promise?

Friday Fives – Holiday Wishes

by Holly Dodson

On Paper Hangover today, the topic is holiday wishes. I’m gonna give you fair warning — I’m a holiday sap.

http://under30ceo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/happy-holidays-cntry.png

1. For Super Spawn to have a magical experience — When I was a kid my parents and grandparents went to HUGE lengths to make us believe in Santa and the giving spirit. Even once we outgrew Santa we still had the most magical Christmases full of love and giving, and that’s something I want for my kiddo.

2. I want to help someone — Every Christmas for as long as I can remember we’ve helped a less fortunate family out. Even if we weren’t in the best position ourselves, we always share what we have. And an opportunity to help *always* presents itself. In fact, I was given one this morning, and my heart is just glowing.

3. For everyone to remain safe — Everyone travels a lot around the holidays. Family, friends, even Super Spawn and I will hit the roads this year. I wish that everyone would make it wherever they’re going safely. Last year we witnessed a horrific crash (but were able to help, thank goodness) that resulted in life-flight and three ambulances blaring away. I don’t want to relive that.

4.  For Super Spawn to feel loved –  This is really kinda personal, but it is a true wish, and I’m happy to report it came true.  I wished for kiddo’s dad to make an effort this Christmas, and two presents for Super Spawn arrived this week from him.  (His dad lives overseas)  I’m so glad.  So, so glad.

5.  Happiness and Peace — For everyone.  For each of you, for my family.  This is the time of year where we’re all missing our lost loved ones, and looking forward to the possibilities of next year.  I just hope that each of you finds peace and happiness in those dreams and memories.

See?!  Total holiday sap.  :)   What about you guys?  What’s on your wish list?

Open Forum

by Holly Dodson

Today I thought we’d have a little fun.  My brain is groggy thanks to allergies and cooler weather, so let’s do a Q&A session!  You ask, I’ll answer.  Whatever you want to know — it can be about writing, about my processes, general stuff, whatever suits your fancy.

I’ll answer in the comments, or if it’s a long answer question, I’ll make a blog post out of it.

So, let’s hear it, what questions are running through your mind this morning?

Disclaimer:  If you ask me things like, “What’s Super Spawn’s real name,” I won’t answer.  :)   Not that I don’t want to but, you know, privacy issues and all.

Ten Things About Me

by Holly Dodson

I’ve been tagged by the lovely Miss Cole to share with you all ten things about myself!  Aren’t you excited?  I know you are.  She also gave me an award, which I am going to share with the people I tag.  So, thank you very much and enjoy!

I really like this award, it matches my blog! ;)   Thanks, Miss Cole!

On with the show…

10 Things You Didn’t Already Know About Me:  (How’s that for a title?  Ha.)

  1. I can’t stand peanut butter.
  2. My favorite thing to do when I get stressed out is to get my hair cut.  Short.
  3. I frame Super Spawn’s “art” and hang it in my office.
  4. I found a book from when I was seven years old the other day — Boxcar Children.  I had written all sorts of notes in the blank pages in the back.
  5. When I was in elementary school, my best friend and I would have sleepovers so we could read together.
  6. I’m scared of tall bridges.
  7. I have a texture issue — and Super Spawn loves to use it against me to make me gag.  He thinks it’s funny.
  8. I really like lists, and although you may already know that, I just feel the need to share the fact that I’m loving this list.  Super fun listmakeage.
  9. My new WIP is now a good bit over the 10k words mark.
  10. I only need glasses for reading.

There you have it!

Now, I think I’ll tag…

Meredith, Lindy, Ghenet, and Kirsten!

Have a great weekend, guys!

This Is My Town

by Holly Dodson

**Not sure what today’s Road Trip is, so I’m posting something I’ve had saved for a while to tell you a little more about me.  Hope you enjoy.**

On the outside, my town doesn’t look like anything special.  But on the inside, it’s something spectacular.

In my town, the police stop traffic for funeral processions.  They step out of their patrol cars and hold their wide-brimmed hats to their chests.  The Captain of the police squad himself will lead the procession, and heaven forbid someone should decide not to pull over.  The Captain’s car will swerve across both lanes, ensuring their quick departure into the grass.

My town is all about respect.

You won’t find big buildings in my town.  No, it’s full of dusty roads and pickup trucks lifted to the sky.  You walk into a store and people shout your name.  On Friday nights, the whole town can be found at the high school’s football stadium.  There aren’t a lot of things to do in my town, unless you like to be outside.  We’ve got beaches, rivers, natural springs, and more wildlife than I can name.

This really is my town.  A favorite place to visit in the summer.

My town is all about community.

In a crisis, the neighbors are always right there to help.  Teenagers host candlelight vigils in memory of lost friends.  Everybody may know your business, but it can lead to unexpected happiness.  Like Christmas gifts brought by a stranger, left on doorsteps, without a word of thanks expected.

I grew up in this town, and I’m proud to call it mine.

And this post has no purpose other than I needed to write it.  So, there ya go.

Who I Am

by Holly Dodson
*Disclaimer: I am doped up on cough meds and Tylenol, so cut me some slack if this makes no sense today, lovelies  You’re the best!*

Keeping with the answering my call for feedback.  Several people asked to know more about me…

Have you ever heard that country song that goes something like this:

I am Rosemary’s granddaughter, the spitting image of my father, and when the day is done, my mama’s still my biggest fan.  Sometimes I’m clueless and I’m clumsy, but I’ve got friends that love me, and they know just who I am.

Well,

I am Super Spawn’s mother, a writer and lover, and when the day is done, my sister is my biggest fan.  It’s often that I’m clueless and I’m clumsy; I’ll fall flat down on my face, and get back up to try it all again.  Determination runs deep, and some may say I’m stubborn, but that’s okay ’cause I know just who I am.

I’m a dreamer, not a quitter.  I’m a giver, not taker.  I refuse to be a loser.  And when the day is done, I can face myself and smile.

And that tells you, well, practically nothing.  And it doesn’t fit the song’s tempo, but oh well.  :)   I hope you enjoyed this installment of Holly On Meds.  Come back tomorrow for another dose.  lol
