Book of the Week: The Dark Divine Trilogy by Bree Despain

by Holly Dodson
The Dark Divine (The Dark Divine, #1)

The Dark Divine #1

Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared–the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood–but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude’s high school. Despite promising Jude she’ll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel’s shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes.

The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy’s dark secret…and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it–her soul.

The two books that follow The Dark Divine are:

The Lost Saint (The Dark Divine, #2)     The Savage Grace (The Dark Divine, #3)

I stepped in to read these books right after the The Savage Grace was released.  It was kind-of awesome to download all three on my Nook at once and read them one after another.  Talk about getting sucked into a world!  I pretty much lived, breathed, and dreamed of Grace, Daniel, and Jude for a week.

One thing I really loved about this set of stories is how the consequences were set up.  Without being spoilery — there is a lot of play on belief and philosophy of life and what it means to make an ultimate sacrifice.  Now, don’t get me wrong…there’s nothing preachy in these pages, but it is thought provoking.

The pacing of these stories is quick and intense.  I literally would finish one and go straight into the next, because I simply couldn’t wait to find out where everything was going.

It’s really hard to not spoil the huge main plot point in a review.  lol

Overall I’ll say this:  The romance is equal parts sweet and steamy without going over the top, the tension is HIGH, and the writing is fantastic.

ARC Tour News

by Holly Dodson

Guess what!  I have fun ARC Tour related news!

Photobucket

If you missed your chance to join in on the SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY ARC Tour, or didn’t get pulled in the raffle, it’s your lucky day!  Susan has launched her brand new (and gorgeous) website for SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY.

Even more fun though, is the scavenger hunt that’s happening!  All around the site there are opportunities to find extra content related to the SS&D world AND the fabulous book trailor that Susan herself created.  But the best part is that you have a chance to win a spot on the ARC tour OR a pre-order of SS&D!

So hurry over and see if you can find all the pieces to the hunt!

Book of the Week – Spell Bound

by Holly Dodson
Spell Bound (Hex Hall, #3)

Spell Bound (Hex Hall #3)

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

I have done one of these in a few weeks, have I?  Shame on me, because I’ve read some pretty awesome books!  Not least of which is Spell Bound, the final book in the Hex Hall series, by Rachel Hawkins.

Let’s not play coy here.  It’s no secret that I love reading trilogies (well, series in general).  There’s so much more room to get invested in a character and a world with more than one book.  But I also find that it leads me to expect more and more from each subsequent novel as I fall more and more into this reality.

The good news is, this one doesn’t disappoint.  Hawkins has done a masterful job pulling every plot thread together for a WHAM-POW ending to this series.

With deception and secrets around every corner, there isn’t a dull moment in this book.  It was a great wrap-up to a fun and compelling series.

Have any of you read the series?  Did you enjoy the final installment?

Happy Birthday

by Holly Dodson

Happy 5th Birthday to my precious Super Spawn!

Me and Super Spawn on his first 4th of July.

Five years goes so fast.

You know how in high school and job interviews people always seem to ask where you see yourself in five years?  Well, I can honestly say that five years ago, I’d have never seen today coming.

I knew having a baby would change my life forever, but I had no idea how much.  In my wildest guess I’d never have pictured us where we are today, and maybe that’s for the better.  In the last five years I’ve had to make some very tough decisions, and have gone through some serious rough patches, but all of that has led us to a far greater future than I’d have thought possible.

And it’s all because of my sweet little boy who inspired me beyond measure.

So, I want to wish a very happy birthday to my bubby!  Mommy loves you more than anything.

Nut-free cupcakes for all!  ;)

I swear the days just fly by and before I realize it I’ve lost a whole week on the blog!  To make up for it, I’ll share some of the fun events that have been keeping me away.

First, my precious little Super Spawn graduated from Pre-K…

Super Spawn makes a pretty cute graduate.

We’ve done birthday parties for friends…

And I had my 10 year high school reunion!  Nothing like being shoved back in a room full of people you went to high school with to put some fuel in the YA inspiration fire.  ;)

Me (in the middle) and two of my best friends from high school.

So what have you guys been up to?
